Nagasaki Lantern Festival 2011

The Nagasaki Lantern Festival is a yearly event that celebrates Chinese new year. It is on for 2 weeks and it is probably Nagasaki's most famous and popular festival. The festivities are mainly around Chinatown, but there are different events dotted around the city.

There are dragon dances, parades, food stalls, Chinese traditional music, tai chi displays and "九州内のキャンペーンレデ紹介". This translates roughly to "Kyushu Ladies self introduction campaign" however the translation has no real meaning without understanding the context.

"Kyushu Ladies Self Introduction Campaign" Lets understand the context :-)

The organisers bring a bunch of pretty Japanese girls from the different prefectures of the Kyushu to parade in front of a large crowd and talk about themselves and ermm... their prefectures' popular food. Kind of like a "show and tell" presentation back in school!

I noticed that this year the English translation was changed from the racier (and slightly 1930's "hoorah henry" title) "Kyushu Beauties campaign".

Relax men! It's always been the same boring show and tell affair. You can't see bikinis - especially not in February.

Nagasaki Chinatown Facts.

FACT 1: Nagasaki's Chinatown is the oldest in Japan.
FACT 2: Chinatown's Chinese food is ridiculously overpriced ( and not very good...shhh.)
FACT 3: For around ¥7000 you can buy an imitation yellow and black jumpsuit that Bruce Lee wore in "Game of Death"!

So, on Tuesday Ikumi and I went to the Lantern Festival. Here are the photos.

The festival features a lot of big animal lanterns. Specifically the "12 Chinese Zodiac animals". These laterns light up the whole of downtown Nagasaki.
Nagasaki's famous "Spectacles Bridge" This part of Nagasaki is especially beautiful for the festival as lanterns light up the whole river

肉まん!(nikuman). This is the Nagasaki version of the  " pork dumpling" that I ate in Osaka...however the Osaka version was much better. Sorry Nagasaki.

Foodophiles, sorry for the lack of food photos. However I am happy to report that we ate nikuman, meronpan, goto udon and other goodies - we were too hungry to take photos of the food. Next time Gadget, next time.
